And Now Denver
Posted by Michael Livingston in Homelife on July 29th, 2008
Well, we’re now in the mountains above Denver, which will likely be our last stop before heading back East to Charleston. There’s blue sky above the pines outside my window, and I can see a little doe meandering the ridgeline a stone’s throw from the deck. It’s not a sad sight to see.
There’s a lot to do here, with many folks to visit down in the city plus the possibility of making a few day trips to various locales around here looking for real estate or trying to break the Jeep (or both). I might nip up to Laramie to catch some astronomy action at Launch Pad, and there’s a chance I could go downtown for a bit of hanging around at WorldCon, too.
Busy, busy, busy.
But damn if it isn’t beautiful here.
Life in Ouray

Here’s a brief slideshow of pictures from the past few days hereabouts.
Pa-Co-Chu-Puk

That’s the name of the little state park below the Ridgway dam. Less than half an hour from where I sit writing this in Ouray, it’s a terrific stretch of catch-and-release trout fishing. My parents are in town for about a week, so Dad and I went down there today for a bit of flyfishing. It was marvelous. Good weather, good scenery, good company, and tight lines (because we caught things, you see). Nothing as spectacular as that behemoth I caught on the Platte River in May, but some beautiful fish nonetheless. I landed four, if I recall correctly.
I took some pictures yesterday of two bucks (male deer, not dollar bills) standing beside our Kia Rondo parked out in front of the house. Ouray is that kind of place. I’ll try to post one sometime.
In other news, I finished chapter 24 of Four Shards tonight. It rattled in as the longest one so far: 4,647 words. That brings the novel up to over 85,000 words all told: far more than it should be given that I’m planning 40 total chapters.
Tomorrow we’re going Jeeping. The plan is to hit Poughkeepsie Gulch, which is the hardest trail around these parts. Trail descriptions of it can be found here (note especially the rolled Jeep) and here. I’ve never driven Thumper III (my lovely LJ) up it, though I’ve done it in at least a couple other rigs. I’m looking forward to seeing how the new four-wheel-drive baby handles it.
Ah… vacation.
Back in Ouray
Posted by Michael Livingston in Homelife on July 21st, 2008
Well, we’ve returned from our trip to the Larson family farm up near Sidney, Montana. A good time was had by all, I think, though we’re happy to be back in the place we love best.
For my part, I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to do a bit of horseback riding, 4×4 gator driving, wheat-field walking, and, intellectual that I am, farm learning. The latter was especially terrific: I love finding out how little I know about something when there’s some folks around to better educate me on the matter. I’m no farming expert now, but I sure do know a lot more about it than I did when I went up there!
Anyway, back to Ouray and back to Four Shards.
Montana Bound
Posted by Michael Livingston in Homelife on July 16th, 2008
We’re heading out to Montana this morning for Sherry’s family reunion at the farm. We’ll probably stay in Sheridan, Wyoming tonight.
It is highly unlikely that we’ll have much in the way of internet for almost a week. Alas.
Legal Success

I’d say I should’ve been a lawyer, but I think I’d hate the drudgery.
At any rate, today’s legal wrangling was a success.
