Chaucer Criticism

Postings are not required, 203ers. Your grade will depend solely on the paper copies. But if you want to show off and share around, here’s where you can do it.

Big Football Hits

Lost in the debacle that was another defense and special teams embarrassment for my beloved Broncos yesterday, was this monstrous tackle by one of the rookies:

Nice hit, rook!

More Honor for “Angel of Marye’s Heights”

From fellow writer Aliette de Bodard comes a note this evening that my short story “The Angel of Marye’s Heights,” which appeared in Paradox Magazine, has been accorded Honorable Mention in The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror for 2008, edited by Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link, and Gavin Grant. I think this is the second time I’ve received Honorable Mention from them!

I’ve turned the last page on Four Shards of Heaven. Feels good.

Now to get an agent …

English Department Website

Last August our new department chair asked for volunteers to look at redesigning our current website; long story short, I ended up doing a full revision of the layout and coding from scratch. The new one is hosted on the “testing” area of my site here while the department looks it over and gives me feedback.

I’m certain there’ll be changes made, but I sure hope they aren’t significant. Not because I don’t want the criticism, but because I don’t have enough hours in the day for everything!

FYI: It’s a bit Livingston-centric at the moment — I’m responsible for all the pictures, and I’m the only faculty member with an individual page — but that’s just because I worked with what I had at hand. I’m hoping content will start rolling in from the rest of the faculty soon after the design work is settled.

PS: Try resizing one of the pages. See the way that banner stays centered? I’m really proud of that effect.

Sequel Research

I still have a handful of things to do before Four Shards goes out into the world — and those are held off by grading at the moment — but none of that is stopping me from starting some research on its sequel. On my desk right now are books and articles on Petra, Khirbet et-Tannur, The Tarpeian Rock, Varus and the 4BCE revolt in Jerusalem, as well as some assorted things on Alexandria and Rome in general.

It’s cool stuff. I’m particularly smitten with Khirbet et-Tannur in modern Jordan — a simply fascinating site.

Editable Comments and Other Plugins

Thanks to the esteemed Mary Robinette Kowal, comments on this website are now editable by the commenter. Well, and by me — though I’m going to try to keep myself in check.

This seems as good a time as any to present a list of this website’s current plugins for interested parties. Note that this is a list of all plugins I have on the site, but not all of them are activated:

Novel Revisions

The last of my first draft readers got back to me yesterday, and the news was good. Very good, in fact. It can be terribly difficult for a writer to get a clear sense of success without external input, and I feel quite privileged to have such able first readers. I’d name them, but I don’t know if I have permission to do so.

Anyway, I’m making some adjustments this week. Then I will make a list of agents and start shopping it. I’m anticipating a seven-figure deal by election day. It’s that easy, right?
